Most blockages are caused by items such as wet wipes, nappies and tampons, cotton buds and hair. These should never be flushed away in a toilet we can’t stress that enough, all it takes is for a small item to snag in a drain and then this creates an area where smaller debris can build up.

Also never pour fats and grease down a plug hole or toilet. As soon as grease and fat cools it will cling to your drains gradually building up and debris begins to stick to the surface of your drain.

How to unblock an outside drain.

  1. The first thing to do is to carry out a visual inspection of your drain. You will need to locate your drain cover and remove it by using a screwdriver around the edge however using manhole keys is advisable.
  2. The manhole cover may be very stubborn to remove as they often sit for years without being opened. Once opened you should see the water backed up. Usually it is a soil pipe blocked at this point. It may be that you see debris in this area and once removed your drains start again to flow freely.
  3. If the blockage is further down the drains make sure you have a set of drain rods and simply push these into the blocked chamber and rotate clockwise to dislodge blockages.
  4. After rodding your drain clean the drain thoroughly to break up any remaining debris also pick out any debris you can using gloves as this can be a dirty job. You can also finish the job by using a drain unblocker product to help remove debris left over.
